I don't care if you think Brutalism is ugly.
It's not exactly a unique hot take to say that you think brutalism is not pretty, y'all
It isn't supposed to be pretty. That's not what it was for.
Also, every Modernist building is not Brutalism

It isn't supposed to be pretty. That's not what it was for.
Also, every Modernist building is not Brutalism
It's not called Brutalism because the buildings are supposed to be "brutal" in English
It comes from the French, 'Béton brut' (raw concrete).

Don't make me be really pedantic about art history
I will.
I have the training.
I will.

You don't have to love Brutalist buildings but I think you should give them their context and understand why they are important
Brutalist buildings are a part of 20th Century Modern Art
And the impulse to reject Modern Art is an impulse that fascists play into

And the impulse to reject Modern Art is an impulse that fascists play into
You can disrupt this impulse by LEARNING about Modern Art and placing and appreciating it within its proper context
"I don't like it, it's ugly" isn't a proper critique of any art work
"I don't like it, it's ugly" isn't a proper critique of any art work
But "I don't like it" ESPECIALLY is not a good crit of a Modern Art piece
b/c those works are not ASKING for you to like them
They are asking you for DIFFERENT THINGS

The reason people were interested in Brutalism as a style is because of innovation in techniques of reinforced concrete
Which made it easier and cheaper to build large buildings in the first part of the 20th century

The idea that large buildings could be easy and cheap to build
Led some architects to envision Brutalism as a socialist solution to provide housing to the largest amount of people possible
Led some architects to envision Brutalism as a socialist solution to provide housing to the largest amount of people possible
And yeah, it gave some people the idea that they induce Large Feelings in people by playing with scale and unusual forms
And you know what?
They did that shit.
Because A Lot of people sure do have Some Feelings when looking at their work.
And you know what?

What on earth makes you think that wasn't INTENTIONAL
Because it WAS
Because it WAS

ART HISTORY IS REAL
IT EXISTS
IT EXISTS
This is a good video to learn more about the context of Brutalism
This is a fair criticism.
A lot of the failures of Brutalism have been failures to follow thru on the ideals of the style and failures in upkeep and maintenance
As we have seen failures in all our public works and public services since the 1970s. https://twitter.com/MogTheConfessor/status/1341375591501729795?s=19

Brutalism is not perfect.
It kind of didn't work.
But the REASONS why it didn't work are more important than simply calling it ugly.
