In the last 2-3 months I’ve noticed a big spike in people I’ve never spoken to before asking for science/conservation/science communication career advice.
Here’s why I don’t give anything other than the most basic advice, advice that you could find elsewhere:

1) I don’t know you. I don’t know your strengths, I don’t know your goals, I don’t know what you’re willing to compromise or what’s a deal breaker, etc.
You probably shouldn’t make major life decisions based on advice from people who don’t know these things.

2) My path is not the only path (or the best or most appropriate path for you).
What worked for me might not work for you. What didn’t work for me might work great for you.

3) I don’t know the answer to a lot of the specific questions people are asking. I haven’t heard of every possible school in the world, or every possible employer.
4) Giving you useful personalized advice requires a lot of time, and I just don’t have time to do that for everyone who asks me.
