Now. About this oil drilling.

I should say I was pro-drilling on the basis that frankly we needed money, and oil wasn't selling for $48 a barrel at the material time. When I came to understand where the wells are, and the areas importance I swiftly changed my mind.
I still think that the treasury could use the corn, we all know our economic struggles. For me, if the Saudis are diversifying, shiftibgng away from oil, then we shouldn't be charting the opposite course.

We are resource rich in other ways.
It comes down to two industries. This thought is a product of the pandemic.

Agriculture which already exists, and Energy which needs to be developed.

I place little to no future reliance on tourism in my mind. We are in a Covid world for at least the next 3-5 years in my view
Tourism also doesn't have a safety mechanism to absorb the blow of pandemics, natural disasters and such.

A sensible government policy would be to make tourism our number 2 economic pillar, with the bulk of.our sovereign wealth coming from agriculture, and energy.
In my mind it should go Agriculture, Energy, Tourism - that sounds like wealth to me.

When I say Energy, I mean using two things we have available all year round - the sun, and the sea. I would take a whole cay and make it a solar farm for example.
Agriculture is tricky, because before we start getting into the big money export market we need to feed ourselves and START BUYING BAHAMIAN PRODUCE.

One immediate agricultural export is our Goat Pepper. Yeah, sounds crazy huh?
Fun fact: Bahamian Goat Peppers are hotter than a scotch bonnet or habanero. They aren't the same pepper contrary to popular belief.

Our pepper is genetically unique and grows most easily and abundantly here.

Think about that.
Also, FYI - when energy costs are low, and food costs are low things like disposable income tend to increase. It makes life more manageable. The Bahamas is an EXPENSIVE place.
My point is, if we had taken steps to develop a sustainable energy industry and investing in agriculture at the time the oil discussions first came up, we would have no need to be considering it now.
