I see a lot of people on Twitter make fun of this tweet - quite rightly. I also see constant sarcasm about 'sunlight uplands'.
But - and I hate to say this - I don't think it works. Lefties should know why:

To give another example (which some will hate): most of Corbyn's supporters don't hate him for offering optimism and a different vision.
He may have gotten beaten, badly, but people get emotionally attached to optimism. They become reluctant to criticise it.

On the Left we have an entire *industry* of writers and activists who only offer hope and vision. They have no idea how to get there. They have no plan. But do they get punished for it? No.
Who gets criticised? People who question those plans.

Seems to me there's little point in criticising Boris Johnson for being an optimist. That's what people like about him.

Same for Brexit - we're criticising them for dreaming about "sunlit uplands"!
Like.... who doesn't want to see sunlight uplands (whatever that means)? We come across as people who don't like optimistic visionaries. It doesn't work.

I think Keir's Starmer's forensic criticisms of Johnson can only go so far. People will say: 'what are you offering instead then?' - they want to hear some optimism from the Labour Party too.
What does that look like in the middle of a train wreck? No idea. But he needs it.

Obviously, what we see as delusion, a lot of people will see as optimism. Plus, a vision has to be realistic (which is why Corbyn's manifesto fell flat).
But the point is - people don't punish 'optimists'. We already see this on our side all the time. Good to remember that.
