Despite the permanent ceasefire agreement, close scrutiny of armed groups & in context of the UN’s economic track, #Libya’s institutions & public infrastructure continues to be plagued by incidents of violence, hijacking & armed confrontations. Here’s a short thread on the events
The @UNSMILibya issued a statement of condemnation after the latest violent incident between armed groups in #Tripoli and the @NOC_Libya. https://unsmil.unmissions.org/unsmil-condemns-latest-acts-intimidation-against-noc
The combination of armed attacks and blockades are not new in #Libya. According to @Reuters, the NOC has been subject to ‘110 armed attacks since 2011”. https://de.reuters.com/article/us-libya-oil-sharara-idUSKBN1O91LT
In Sep 2018, the NOC Headquarter in #Tripoli was attacked by several armed men, with 2 members of staff being killed. This was” the first attack of its kind against the top managers of #Libya’s state oil industry”. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-libya-security-idUSKCN1LQ0SH
The blockade of #Libya’s oil production on January 19th by tribesmen loyal to Khalifa #Hafter’s #LAAF cost the #NOC according to #UNSMIL ‘11 billion #USD in 2020.’
The NOC took a very clear standpoint to foreign powers intervening in Libya’s oil sector like mercenaries of the Russian Wagner group, known to be supporters of #Hafter & the #LAAF. In Sep 2020 they called for a ‘demilitarisation’ of the sector @emad_badi https://twitter.com/emad_badi/status/1306742061706686464
In the same month, armed groups shot a pipeline in #Libya from the port of Zawiya to #Tripoli, to restrict the supply of fuel to the capital. https://fr.reuters.com/article/libya-energy-idAFL5N1LZ5YI
The #NOC issued a statement in recent days that they will take legal action against armed groups known to have been involved in such extortion and blackmail including the threat of car bombings. https://noc.ly/index.php/en/new-4/6333-an-important-statement-17-12-2020
In 2017, the #NOC issued a similar statement after the attack on Al Wafa oil field saying ‘The NOC's position toward blackmailing the state for financial/political goals is clear and any official who offers money/deals is a partner in this crime.’ https://noc.ly/index.php/en/new-4/2192-noc-statement-regarding-shutting-down-of-al-wafa-field
