While there is much we welcome in the @PONIPressOffice report on policing of BLM protest in June – the timing, approach and lack of consistency in this report give us cause for concern.

@PONIPressOffice clearly states that the complaints of discrimination and unfairness are justified, substantive and cogent, but concluded that this discrimination & unfairness was neither intentional nor related to the race & ethnicity of those involved in 6 June event.

No other explanation for this discrimination and unfairness is offered. So what does the Ombudsman consider was the reason for discrimination? At the same time, the report also concludes that the policing of the 6 June protests failed to consider human rights.

Human rights are not abstract, they relate to specific protests. The report concludes that other events – notably the “save our statues” protests organized by known loyalists with paramilitary links – were policed with more sensitivity and tact

The rights of some members of the community- those with political links, a history of violence -are considered as deserving of more respect than others. It wasn’t a failure of balancing human rights, it was a failure to take into account the humans rights of others.

We stress that the complaints were made to the Ombudsman before the 13 June protests. We did not seek an investigation based on a comparison – the report reads as if it was only after there might be a perception of unfairness in the way that 13 June was treated.......

that the Ombudsman considered there was enough public interest.
The policing of 6 June is deserving of investigation, transparency and accountability – irrespective of the statues protest

BLM protest were against systemic police racism, forces around the world – not least in other parts of the UK have reckoned with their own biases and discrimination against BME communities and work still remains as we have seen.....

......e.g. met investigation of photos being shared of dead black women). It would be astounding if the PSNI were the one police force in the UK – or indeed the world – that is untainted by racism, as the report seems to suggest.
The report credits @ChiefConPSNI
engaging with the BME but fails to mention 18 organizations – will not work with the PSNI until there is an apology for exactly the kind of discriminatory policing that the report identifies including incomplete & legally questionable fines

Serious concerns on the timing of the release of @PONIPressOffice
report. A report that was due in September being issued 2 days before Christmas, 9 days before Brexit & at a moment when NI & UK media are focused on serious government failures in the management of the pandemic.
