What is the TSI?

Established in 1971, the TSI assists the DOT’s modal administrations to provide training. It has provided safety, security, and environmental training to over 850,000 public, private, and foreign transportation professionals.

Their mission statement:

“The mission of the [TSI] is to improve the safety of the worldwide transportation system through the training of transportation safety professionals across federal, state, local and international governments, as well as private industry.”

The Transportation Safety Institute (TSI):

-Provides training for transportation safety professionals
-Trains over 25,000 people a year
-Issues certification after course completion
-Based in Oklahoma City, OK

The course topics they cover include:

-Aviation safety
-Hazardous materials or motor carrier safety
-Highway traffic safety
-Pipeline safety
-Public transportation safety

They also issue certification with the World Safety Organization.

TSI is home to the National Aircraft Accident Investigation School:
-Alumni participated in over 124k aircraft accident and incident investigations since 1971*
-Their work has contributed to a 71% reduction in aircraft accidents and incidents from 1970 to 2014*

-TSI serves as a steward for the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to provide up-to-date training for transit workers.

-TSI also serves as a steward for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to train their offices of Research and Program Development (RPD), Regional Operations and Program Delivery (ROPD), and more.

-TSI’s Multi-Modal Safety Division trains public agencies, emergency response personnel and industry in Hazmat, Motor Carrier and Pipeline Safety regulations. This includes training on radioactive materials, explosives, and military airlift.

-TSI also acts as a federal fee-for service organization to create custom training programs.

-TSI has been accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).
