Religious/conservative people in a modern first world society are extremely different, psychologically speaking, from people in traditional societies.

Many do not realize this because they have never seen how a real traditional society operates. I'll try and give some examples.
Political views based on ideas and ideologies is a modernist phenomenon. Elections in developing nations are bogged down by voters who vote along communal lines, many of which have a strong hereditary component which modern ethnic nationalism does not.
Another example is that working with those you view outside your kinship network is usually the last resort. A huge amount of business in developing nations is monopolized by expanded kin networks who would balk at the idea of hiring a stranger, however qualified they may be.
Finally there's the lack of individualism. Since conformity is often emphasized they've found that individuals in traditional societies often have entire dimensions of the Big5 personality measure missing. Their genetically similar counterparts in urban areas do register them.
