Other democracies have strong parliamentary oversight of security and intelligence services including operational issues and the capacity to investigate complaints. There are 11 areas of oversight denied to our parliamentary committee.
Our committee is weak not powerful!
As intelligence and security agencies are handed more power by parliament they must be subjected to strong parliamentary oversight and accountability. There are good people on our committee but they are severely hampered by legislation that is archaic and not fit for purpose.
Democracy requires a parliament with strong and effective oversight of govt security and intelligence agencies. If we are to avoid regulatory capture and ensure accountability then change must take place.
The recent exposure of SAS war crimes is just one example of poor oversight
