Utility shut offs for people w/ disability
The state of GA has a larger population of people w/ some type of disability than the overall country. (27% of Georgians, 25.6% of nation) Utility shutoffs disproportionately affect people w/ disabilities. I Hear You. I See You.

For many, access to electricity is a matter of life or death. Fatalities have occurred from loss of power to medical devices such as an oxygen device. If this type of device has no power for even a short time, someone could lose their life in a matter of minutes.

Telehealth (which requires access to internet and power) has also become very important for the health of many people with disabilities, especially in Georgia where transportation has continued to be a major barrier.

Additionally, the disability population in GA has a higher % of those w/ mobility issues (13.6%) than the nation. The % of people with disabilities that are living in poverty are over double the percentage of ppl w/o disabilities living in poverty (12.2% compared to 26.9%).
A utility shutoff also requires a large deposit to turn it back on, which is placing an even greater burden on this community. The community is already facing a greater burden from COVID-19’s affects. Shutting off their utilities is impacting their health at a larger rate.

I Hear You. I See You. As a Public Service Commissioner, I am committed to providing a voice and organizing individuals with disabilities across the state. #DisabilityJustice #DanielForGeorgia
