Today let's talk about: special interests (SI)!

SIs are those (sometimes) "odd" though very important attachments some folks have that help them get through the day. It might be a interest like fishing, clocks, or it might be a subject like history.
SI is itself an umbrella term taking note of "obsessions," preservations, or intense passionate interests. Predominately for those who are ND, a SI can disrupt routines, schedules, or even be a part of day-to-day activities, giving one a sense of control and order.
While SIs and hyperfixations are slowly being taken up by those neurotypical, the concept is particularly in reference to those with "disabilities." Not one experience of SIs is the "right" one; rather, each person's experience of HF is their own.
EX: my SIs tend to be balloons, certain cartoon shows, topics of research, and other things. I slip into them or fixate to give myself order and to "slow things down" for me. They may put me in a "happy place," but they also can be very distracting. I get angry out of routine.
If my routine is disturbed, or if I'm not able to follow my special interests, I get angry, close off, or otherwise try to get to my interest or fixation asap. Sometimes, my SIs are all I want to talk about. That doesn't mean they're wrong, nevertheless.
Balloons and my phone give me something to feel safe and to hold onto; MLP and Hilda are worlds that have rules and expectations. None of these are destructive, despite how they might conflict with others' routine and interests. They're my rewards and way of restoring energy.
This thread isn't the be all, end all on SIs; but I hope it explains some things about me, like why my character is SO "obsessed" with balloons.

Also, watch Hilda...and MLP. They're so good.
