Watched this great video on a town in the Netherlands,
It has approx 10,000 more people than Dundalk, but I feel Dundalk in particular could be very similar to Houten. Imagine what it could do for the business in the town centre! @dundalkbids @orlamurphy
Both are fully circled with a ring road, and have a train station right in the centre. However there's no through car traffic in Houten, but the entire town is hyper permeable for cycling of all kinds, and the town centre is filled with bikes parked up!
You'd need a multi storey car park to facilitate all those people visiting the town centre if they had to drive instead, not to mention the traffic created and public space that would have to be taken away.
The town is broken up into neighbourhoods, that can all be driven to with the use of the ring road. For those who might wonder how can all Dundalk's car trips be Re routed to its circular route and not have traffic chaos, well..
Because many people will ditch the car and cycle to their destination instead, as by and large, the journey times and convenience by bike would be much better, freeing up the roads for those who really must drive across town. Less demand for car parking brings more green space!:)
