The Creator Economy is going to experience *explosive* growth over the next few years.

Here are 10 trends for creators I'm following in 2021
(thread)
I know it’s the time of year for round-up posts, but, a) 2020 was a dumpster fire I’d rather not reflect on right now, and b) I’m largely starting over online, so I’m in the mood to look forward, not backward.
On with the trends:
On with the trends:
1. Videobooks
I read pitifully few books in 2020 (doomscrolling FTW).
Can videobooks save us from our hummingbird attention spans? @LITvideobooks is betting yes, starting with Contagion from @j1berger and Predictably Irrational from @danariely soon. https://litvideobooks.com

2. Paid Newsletters
Paying for an email newsletter isn’t new, but @SubstackInc put paid newsletters on the map this year, and now @ConvertKit is offering support for them. Watch for paid newsletters to have a breakthrough in 2021.

3. Utility-first CSS
CSS is traditionally written in two parts: 1) name the element, then 2) add CSS in a separate file. @tailwindcss showed us that utility class frameworks are clearly the future of CSS. 2021 will be a huge year for @adamwathan and friends.

4. Jamstack
What's old is new again, and so, the hottest thing in web development is... making static websites. Only instead of hand scripting like it’s 1999, tools like @Netlify and @GatsbyJS make it better. Will Jamstack reach mainstream in 2021? It'll be fun to watch.

5. Subscription Email
Would people pay for email even though Gmail is free? @heyhey proved they will, by making email better (and ad/tracking free). @swissmiss loves it so much she changed her Twitter name to [email protected].
Is HEY a major trend for 2021 or a novelty?

6. Digital Reboots
I hit reset on my digital self this year, deleting tons of old content and orphaned profiles.
@pjrvs went even further ( https://pjrvs.com/bye ) and @chrisguillebeau is considering a clean slate.
Will 2021 be the year of digital reboots?

7. VC Alternatives for Bootstrappers
Venture capital isn’t a fit for most businesses, but bootstrapping isn't always the right choice either. @tinyseedfund, @shl and @indievc are creating different forms of VC alternatives for non-unicorn companies. Watch for more in 2021.

8. Tiny Investment Portfolios
Selling a great but smallish internet business can be a pain.
@awilkinson's Tiny Capital has built an impressive portfolio of businesses, as has @syedbalkhi. Will we see more "tiny" investment portfolios in 2021? I think we will.

9. Apple Silicon
Apple’s decision to ditch Intel is a Big Deal for creators. Performance and battery life get a major jump with the M1 chip, and 2021 is going to see a bunch of new hardware on Apple Silicon. Creators will have good reason to upgrade, and it'll be fun to watch.

10. The Creator Economy
Earning a living as a full-time independent creator has finally gone mainstream.
The next few years are going to see explosive growth in the creator economy. This is a trend all of us who call ourselves creators should benefit from in 2021 and beyond.
