/ @NancySkinnerCA Here's a $10b solution for hard-pressed CA cities: https://twitter.com/NancySkinnerCA/status/1341064141969051648
/ End platinum insurance subsidies for retired police, prison guards and other public employees. CA is the Gucci provider of such subsidies. With 7x Colorado's population, CA spends 115x more on insurance subsidies for retired public employees.
/ Retired employees 65 and over on Medicare get subsidies from CA govts. Police and others retiring as early as 50 eligible for rich premium support from the Affordable Care Act and CoveredCA still their health care paid by CA govts.
/ Families of 4 earning as much as $154,000 per year qualify for ACA and CoveredCA subsidies, yet neither the state nor cities, transit agencies, schools and other governments in CA require retirees to get those before invading current budgets.
/ Some CA governments even subsidize spouses and dependents of retirees. All this unnecessary spending takes billions/yr from current programs and employees.
/ If Medicare, Affordable Care Act and CoveredCA are good enough for the rest of us, they should be good enough for retired CA public employees. If more is needed for low income retirees, you can provide a limited subsidy as Colorado does.
