(1) I've said it before but it's more imp now, as nonprofits are reeling from incr demand & in many cases massively decr revenue. When those at prestigious institutions have high-minded debates critiquing or defending or discussing philanthropy...can we remember the nonprofits?
(2) It's so odd to me how so much discussion of giving happens without any consideration of those on the receiving end -- or those who are served by nonprofits. Nonprofits play a crucial role in this country -- and no, government can't and shouldn't replace everything NPs do...
(3) ...even though it should surely do much more much better. (Also: reality check: As we imagine a world in which government functions in the way we dream it could, and as we seek to make that world come to fruition, we need to not neglect the current realities and suffering.)
(4) So when we talk about philanthropy let's keep the nonprofits front and center. I have read entire books on philanthropy that don't really discuss nonprofits or their role in any meaningful way! It's bizarre.
(5) I have attended meetings and conferences (at fancy universities) that purport to be focused on giving -- how to do it better, how to reform it, the new approach that is superior, whatever -- that, again, seem totally divorced from the receivers, operating nonprofits ...
(6) ... not to mention those they serve. Some of those w the loudest voices about how philanthropy should operate seem to know little about operating nonprofits, much less spent any time in them. Same problem happens with some new donors whose plan 2 come up 2 speed on giving ...
(7) ... is to talk to other donors and maybe some consultants. How about this, too: hang out (or Zoom) with some community-based nonprofits and their staff. Volunteer doing whatever is needed. Talk to their clients. That's all. Just a request.
(8) Because for all its flaws, the vast and diverse nonprofit sector is a source of great strength and resilience in this country, and that's shown through in a big way during this awful year.
(9) And, as frustrated as many nonprofit leaders I know are about inequality and the tax code and the need for reform of our political systems, they also really want folks who have a lot of resources to see, understand, and support their work by giving generously.
(10) That giving is so desperately needed now. On this we should all be able to agree.
