I see that J. K. Rowling has received an award from the BBC for a certain blog post as one of the “best” bits of writing in 2020. Once again, transphobia becomes “bravery” praised by a major news institution while trans writers, like me, remain cheap, easy targets. It’s shitty.
I don’t write to be called ‘brave’; if anything, trans people are called this so casually that many of us roll our eyes. But the truth is that writing our truth in this world IS still radical, is still subversive, is still, well, brave. How can it not be, when we are so despised?
I realize I am a tiny speck of a writer in the world; I’m bad at social media, and I will probably amount to nothing. But I will keep writing in this world that doesn’t want people like me to exist because I refuse to accept that destiny, the J. K. Rowlings of the world be damned
