Looking for a review tool or resources for recruiting and empowering (persistence) students from equity-seeking groups. #SACdn any insight or documents you could send my way?
Also, through some googling I must say that I’m struck by how often a leading or highlighted institutional practice to support recruitment and retention of students from equity-seeking groups is a university preparation course. #DeficitThinking
I’m not entirely sure that the reason an institution is not successfully recruiting or retaining students from equity-seeking groups is that the students aren’t prepared. That seems problematic.
I can acknowledge that practice is not the sole mechanism for improvement, however, if initiatives only focus on students’ perceived deficits or improving sense of belonging (ie. coercing students to assimilate into a problematic culture) then perhaps that is why there is an issue
As a leader at a Post-Secondary Institution, I recognize that there is learning, growth, and change that is needed. I view my role as continuing to learn and grow personally and to encourage greater change locally and systemically.
This started as an effort to get a sense of great resources to support my learning and turned into a bit of a rant. Apologies but it felt important to say.
