Let’s talk about the awesome display of women badassery in the most recent episode of #TheMandalorian . There was a lot of cheering and weeping from women across fandom – let’s get back to that cheering in a few 1/x
Watching Mando participate in an epic rescue mission with Bo-Katan, Koska, Fennec, and Cara serving as the diversionary insertion for Din’s rescue was amazing. 2 women of color, 2 women older than 40. They worked together, supported each other. It was glorious! 2/x
Yes, fans who have been asking for gender parity in representation were very happy to see this happen in an epic episode because it suggests some forethought and planning on the part of the storytelling team. 3/x
Let’s be clear though, we were cheering #StarWars on like a basketball coach who has watched a team that on paper should be winning the game of gender inclusion on-screen and finally made a spectacular three-pointer yet are still down by 20 points in the game 4/x
There are still fundamental ways #StarWars is not hitting on inclusion, when it’s had plenty of time to implement these ideas across the franchise. Women are still underrepresented on this show as directors and no woman has written an episode 5/x
#TheMandalorian still doesn’t have gender parity on speaking roles or in background world building. Scripts need to be checked for parity (ask Pixar for help as they’ve designed a program to do just that.) 6/x
Casting needs to have accountability. Need two shuttle pilots? Need two X-wing pilots or TIE pilots? Why are they always men? Why aren’t they sometimes both women? Need stormtroopers? Biker scouts? Make gender parity happen. 7/x
This season the show had a significant fail on undercutting the storytelling in the episode “The Passenger” which denied #FrogLady agency. This was entirely avoidable. Other Disney storytelling houses are using sensitivity councils. Get one, now. 8/x
Most importantly, #StarWars needs to put its commitment to inclusion down in writing. The goals shouldn’t be “We’re working on it.” At this point, after so many failures, shared goals is the only way to earn that trust. We should know who is answerable and for what 9/x
Moments like these are great. They shouldn't be the exception or something to be applauded but rather the norm. #StarWars has a long way to go to do right by fans who deserve to see themselves in the galaxy far far away 10/10
