I see we are talking about ROR today, so I’m going to write about Jason Botterill, my least favorite figure in Buffalo Sabres history.

This includes the Regas family that nearly lost the franchise.
Botterill was poor at every aspect of his job.

When you consider the number of hats a general manger wears, the ineptitude that oozed from his tenure could possibly fit on top of an aircraft carrier.
He was a cap expert who was terrible with his team’s finances.

He didn’t understand player value, especially restricted free agents.

He had an infatuation with arbitration, which could only lead me to believe he was never sold on his players but...
either lacked the conviction to finally cut ties with them or lacked the wherewithal to identify better players to replace them.

When he made a trade it was usually bad or lacked consequence.

The trade he won acquiring Jeff Skinner was nullified by re-signing him.
It might have been smart to give Skinner 9M x 8 and a full NMC in a 5th, 6th or 7th dimension of our universe, but not in the dimension we currently living.

He was also a poor front door to the organization.
I hate taking shots at someone’s public speaking ability because 1. I know it’s hard and 2. It is a small part of the role as GM, but if you are poor at the other responsibilities of your job, the inability to convey a message to your fans and the media is kind of a big deal.
It makes sense to me that Botterill built his reputation being a number two under a seasoned GM.

He seemed at times to understand the problem, but could never finish his thought in order to fix it.
Working in a more defined role out of the eye of the public scrutiny probably suits his nature.

So yeah, in my opinion there is no way Kevyn Adams, a man with basically no executive resume can be any worse.
