The way history is taught in America is extremely flawed

And partially responsible for this historical revisionism culture we live in

Most people think of history as a battle of us vs them

This is not how I would teach history
I wouldn’t even teach students who “won” wars

The truth is nobody wins

I would teach history as a debate club

And require students to look at things from the so called “losing” sides

This is how I learned history
I love the American Revolution, but I did debates to support the point of view of Loyalists

If you aren’t able to do that you have no business teaching history

The same goes with the civil war and every other war

Our children need to step out of their learning comfort zone
They need to learn that just because someone was a loyalist during the Revolution

That doesn’t make them a bad person. In fact it’s a perfectly reasonable thing.

History may be written by the winners

But to truly understand it you have to study the losers
The scary part is most people don’t want to admit they probably identify with those “losers” a little too much

The American Revolution was not a battle of good and evil

We really need to start seeing both sides of things

End rant.
