It's hard not to feel like a curmudgeon when critiquing the "deal" that was "won" from Congress. On the other hand, I'm accountable to tenants who are actually impacted by this. Here's what they had to say:
Beau in Kentucky: "Mayors and governors... get to use new rental assistance programs for political cover and positive local media coverage. At both local and national levels, this puts the burden on us to ensure that the narrative is that this is not enough."
Linda, a public housing resident in Chicago: "The whole package is a joke--$600 isn't enough, additional $300 for unemployment isn't enough! Debt just piling up for 30 more days and evictions and threats will jump beyond anything we can imagine. Pure B.S. as usual."
Rose, a public housing resident in New York: "So...my opinion is that it sucks! Really sad that the damn Dems didn't fight harder for us! And now to see what happens once Biden's in office!"
Tiara in Nevada: "Rental assistance applications pending from July still haven’t been paid... Clark county have 80 million in rental assistance and applications from July are still pending. Straight bullshit..."
Marsha in Chicago: "It's just keeping us in a holding patten. Families and really children don't need to have this pressure on them. Just cancel the DAMN rent let us Breathe...The Hell with the big landlords."
Max in Philly: “The treatment of people who are already homeless during this crisis has been awful -- imagine what will happen as more and more people enter our broken, patchwork system of "emergency" and "temporary" shelter :(“
Debra, a senior housing resident: "This country needs to take a step back, look at who is hurting most, Black, brown, families, and then ask "What would I need if I was in this place????" Maybe if these Senators or Reps had actual family members facing these issues..."
