Lots of fear, panic about new mutant for #Covid19 that is named VUI-2012/01 and is sweeping the UK. Let's talk about this serial number and why it is worth acknowledging but not losing our heads over the strain or vaccine response 1/
Viruses mutate ALL the time. It's an inherent property that they make mistakes when copying DNA/RNA like a sloppy proof-reader. Usually these mistakes mean nothing, sometimes they make the virus weaker & rarely more harmful 2/
Other Coronaviruses SARS-COV1, MERS also mutated w/o evidence of worse clinical outcomes. In our 1st wave of #Covid19, D614G mutant created alarm too. Also no worse outcomes. And... mRNA vaccines produce potent antibody responses to this strain too. Good! 3/
When we are vaccinated, our immune system triggers a "polyclonal antibody" response - not just one type but a whole repertoire of Abs that can bind to the virus & neutralize in MANY places, likely including where it has mutated to change the spike protein 4/
While vaccine response is likely going to be ok, we DO need to take note of possible ⬆️risk of transmission with R (reproductive no.) more likely to exceed 1 as a result. That means more likely to cause spread than not 5/
Travel restrictions are a good idea while we learn more. And while we do, take comfort in the fact that no matter how many times it mutates, we are safe if our habits don't follow suit. Stay vigilant. Stay home. And #BeGr8Vaccinate 6/ End
