1/7 I just finished my 1st semester as a TT prof at a small lib arts college. The move from the high stakes research world where the sanctity of h-indices is not to be questioned & teaching "gets in the way", to a PUI had me (but mostly my mentors) worried I'd waste my potential.
2/7 Observations:
1.) My institution has already shown support for my research ambitions by funding my first internal grant proposal in full.
2.) I am getting grant writing support from a consulting firm for my NSF MRI prop.
3.) I AM BEING PAID to write this grant by the College

4.) They encouraged outreach with students this summer AND PAID ME FOR IT.
5.) I get 100% autonomy in what upper-div classes I want to offer.
6.) I get funding for a guaranteed meeting every year, or one big one every other year.

7.) The Dean allowed (paid) mental health days this semester.
8.) The students are the icing on the cake. They're incredibly empathetic, inquisitive, and (mostly) invested in their learning.
9.) I have been PAID for all of my service to the College so far.

5/7
10.) Students get automatic funding for research with faculty.
11.) The College offered to pay for my membership to a society w/o me even having to ask.
12.) POs at NSF welcome research (not just education/outreach) proposals from PUIs.
13.) Pub author order doesn't matter

I'm still learning and things aren't perfect. Teaching prep has gotten in the way of finishing some things, but I'm getting there.
I'm privileged to be in the position of loving my job, especially when SLACs and PUIs are mostly discussed in a negative light among R1 types

7/7 In conclusion - Set people free of their expectations of you or your chosen path. Take the risk of being who you want to be. You’ll cultivate much more clarity, joy, happiness, and beauty that way.
And I certainly do not mean to vilify my own mentors. On the contrary, they have all been strong advocates for my own version of success, and I could not have asked for better champions. It's bc of them that I am here, emboldened to speak my truth. <3 <3 <3
