10 Key Highlights from MUN’s 6-2 Win Over Leeds United in the Premier League.
1. Press.

MUN out of possession maintained a 4-2-3-1 block — with Martial tasked to cut off the central passing lanes between CB’s.

MUN looked to press high in a triad to prevent LEE central progression and force them to the flanks where they then can recover or crowd.
2. Opener.

A. MUN’s ball recovery came from their press, crowding LEE — closing off the passing lanes.

B. The distribution of our players, specifically James, and quick passing dragged LEE defense and allowing Scott to run into exploited space left behind and time to shoot.
3. Brace.

Martial’s 3 excellent components for creation of this goal:

(A) Run. He initially tucks in behind then runs in to receive.

(B) Hold-up. Shields and retains the ball well, giving time for Scott to make his run in behind.

(C) Incisive pass. Scott bypasses his runner.
4. Exploitation of Man Marking.

MUN manipulated LEE’s man-man marking by dragging players and creating space centrally for players to run into: quick transitions/breaking press. Ex:

(A) Bruno drags the player: space centrally.

(C) Maguire pushing forward — breaking LEE press.
5. Set Pieces.

MUN organized well in corners by again exploiting LEE’s man-man marking by either:

(A) Holding off players and delaying.
(B) Position closer to the ball, drag players closer e.g Martial.

MUN as a result had space and time to win headers and run unmarked.
6. Transition.

Bruno made several back-heel passes as an attempt to drag his marker and create space.

Martial’s run was fantastic as Fred carries the ball. As a LEE player is drawn to Fred, he gets in behind their backline.

He holds off the player to allow Bruno to shoot.
7. Work-rate.

James and Rashford interchanged multiple times — but in both flanks James tracked back well and doubled up.

This allowed MUN to defend crosses much better and maintain their compactness.

His runs also allowed MUN to transition quicker.
8. Narrowness.

It is a tactical instruction for MUN’s fullbacks to keep narrow at times — however AWB at times tends to drift centrally and lose his runner.

As a result here, he has no time to recover and win the header. This leads to LEE’s most dangerous chance.
9. Conceded.

MUN’s organization for the corner conceded was well — however a combination of a great delivery by Raphina and assigning Fred, aerially weak, to mark results in the goal.

For the second, DDG gifts LEE through his poor distribution. AWB/Lindelof do not close down.
10. Counter Attack.

Lindelof wins the aerial duel — Rashford, having tracked back recieves.

MUN exploited LEE’s man marking twice: through AWB/Scott’s pass MUN invited players and created space centrally.

James’ run and touch set himself for a 1v1.
