Tom Izzo called MSU's loss to Northwestern "one of the more inept performances in my 26 years."

Let's watch some of the defensive clips that contributed to that statement:
Before I begin, I marked a lot more clips than this, but if I want any chance of people getting through this thread, I had to cut out defensive possessions that didn't lead to points.
Watch where 3 MSU players are as the shot misses. All of Northwestern's players are around the paint.

"First three steps" are crucial in transition defense. Fine if Hauser is going to crash, but watch Langford especially.

No urgency to get back and it is an easy leak-out.
Not sure what Hall is doing here. Northwestern's possess. ends in a slipped ball screen with a double side tag.

Hall overcommits too much to the roll (with help behind), causing him to be late in his close-out.

MSU bench is not happy.
Henry falls asleep here and gets backdoored. MSU doesn't have any back side help --> easy layup.
This one really got the MSU coaches upset.

Gabe Brown is guarding Kopp, who passes and sets a screen for Nance.

Brown seems unaware. MSU was switching some, but he neither communicates the screen nor is in a ball screen coverage to prevent penetration.
Nice ATO from Northwestern.

NW had been running a set where the corner man would set a flare screen for the player on the wing.

MSU is switching, but Gaines never actually makes contact on the screen. Hauser anticipates the switch and Gaines slips to the hoop. No help = basket
Anthony Gaines has shot 1 three all season and is game planned as a non-shooter.

Brown wildly closes-out on him --> open corner 3 for Buie
Here's another transition D clip. When the shot goes up, 3 MSU players are outside the arc.

Watch Langford and Watts.

There is no urgency to get back and Nance blows by both for the dunk.
MSU's 5-man ball screen coverage is the ball handler's defender going over the screen and the big hard hedging.

Henry goes under the screen and Hall doesn't hedge. Berry walks into a clean three.
This is the play that led to Izzo pulling Henry.

Henry is guarding Gaines, a non-shooter. You have to play him to drive.

Henry bites on the pump fake and Gaines drives by for the layup.
Again, MSU's ball screen coverage is for the 5 to hard hedge.

Nance slips out of the ball screen, but Marble is in position to hedge.

Gabe Brown is slow to recognize the play and help from the weak side.
Last clip. Unsure what Watts is doing here.

Don't think MSU had "ICED" ball screens all game (keep the ball to the sideline). If thats what he wanted, it's the big's job to call out the cvg.

If not, Watts doesn't force Buie to use the screen

No weak side help from Brown again
