So, because I feel this is important here's a simple thread explaining that being #proship doesn't mean you have to be comfortable with/consume every single piece of fiction created.
A lot of people seem to be under the impression that, to be pro-ship you need to be comfortable with every single subject under the sun which is not true in the slightest! If someone tells that to you they are lying. And are probably toxic, stay away from them.
Everyone has their squicks, triggers and "hard-nos" and not only that's absolutely fine it's good to know what you like and what you don't like.
It makes your online experience all that more enjoyable and allows you to block/mute things that make you uncomfortable/trigger you.
It makes your online experience all that more enjoyable and allows you to block/mute things that make you uncomfortable/trigger you.
However, being uncomfortable with something =/= harassing someone for what they like in fiction. Just because you don't wanna read this one scat, non-con, incest fic that doesn't mean you are not being pro-ship. You just don't wanna expose yourself to things you don't like.
You can have the most vanilla tastes in the world and still be pro-ship! Pro-shipping isn't measured by how much of a "deviant" you are! It's not a competition to see who can take the darkest themes without flinching.
I'll use myself as an example. I'm big into sibling incest, shota/loli, furries and some gore (I'm listing these because these are the subjects that are mostly under fire when it comes to this subject).
However, non-con makes me incredibly uncomfortable, parent/child incest doesn't sit right with me, and anything involving scat/watersports/bodily fluids in general (save for mild blood) makes me legit sick to my stomach.
The thing is, I just pre-emptively mute these terms/block posts with those subjects when I happen upon them and go on my merry way. There's absolutely zero need to attack people who want to explore those subjects in fiction, because it's their thing.
And I don't care why it's their thing. I don't care if they are coping, venting, or if they do that to get off. It's fiction and they should be free to express themselves in any way they see fit.
So, TL;DR: if you stay on your lane and don't harass/insult/threaten people over fiction, you are pro-ship. It's as simple as that! Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
