Watching my fellow #MedTwitter equally celebrate getting vaccinated or lament not yet getting it, I have a few comments. It's really impt we all remember that the vaccine is NOT a thank you for all the immense hard work over the last 9 months. If you get it early, 1/6
...it doesn't imply you worked hardest and conversely if you haven't recv'd it yet, it doesn't mean your hard work is not seen and valued. This is a limited resource and the goal of distribution is to keep hospitals open 2/6
...for the unbelievable number of people who are sick right now. Each state/hospital may have a different exact algorithm, but the goal of all is to keep the doors open for patients, those whom we all serve. Also, keep in mind that hospital workers are overall safe thanks to 3/6
... better protocols, sufficient PPE. Most HCWs who get #COVID19 contract it outside the work place. So as a rule, regardless of where in hosp you work, MDs are at significantly less risk of infxn than housekeeping or cafeteria workers due to our income and privilege 4/6
It's OK to be grateful/relieved when it's your turn. We've all been through hell. But don't equate your place in line with your value/worth, and most of all don't complain if you are getting vaccinated in the 3rd or 4th week instead of the 1st. 5/6
Remember our patients are watching us. Many of them are at high risk too. We are going before pts only so that we can keep taking care of them.
