So you're getting a Covid vaccine soon. What's next?
Here's a guide to post-vaccine life, from me, @clairecm and @KatherineJWu https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/21/upshot/after-vaccine-recommendations-experts.html

The simplest way of thinking about this is: The sooner you get your vaccine, the less it should change your life. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/21/upshot/after-vaccine-recommendations-experts.html
That's because the vaccines are really good, but they don't offer perfect protection--and there's still a lot of covid out there. The less careful you are, the more chances you'll give your vaccine to fail. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/21/upshot/after-vaccine-recommendations-experts.html
But, as more and more people get vaccinated, life is going to get safer. Socializing among vaccinated people will be much safer than socializing with unvaccinated people.
And, over time, a rising share of people with vaccines will reduce covid rates. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/21/upshot/after-vaccine-recommendations-experts.html

Epidemiologists talk about "herd immunity," a sort of tipping point where enough people are protected that it gets hard for a disease to spread widely. When we reach that point AND you're vaccinated, life is going to be a lot safer.
But a lot of epidemiologists we spoke with said that, even then, some things may not go back to a 2019 normal. It may still make sense to wear masks in crowded places, and to avoid risky venues like large concerts. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/21/upshot/after-vaccine-recommendations-experts.html
@uma_karma put this in a way I found really helpful: We should think about "moving forward" and not "getting back to normal." 2021 normal is going to be a little different than 2019 normal. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/21/upshot/after-vaccine-recommendations-experts.html
Our article includes some expert advice about various situations that may arise as more and more of us get the vaccine. We hope it's helpful in thinking about this in-between period we are now entering. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/21/upshot/after-vaccine-recommendations-experts.html
