Friends & relatives are messaging me about the "new SARS-CoV-2 strain in the UK" and freaking out. Understandably bc they are consuming every bit of news about #COVID19 and aren't experts.

I share a few nuggets to keep them calm but vigilant ⤵️
#scicomm #science #medtwitter
1️⃣ 🦠mutate all the time. This is something known & studied in #science.
2️⃣ scientists made 💉 w/ these mutations in mind. #CovidVaccine
3️⃣ this isn't the 1st news about a mutation in the virus, so remain calm after reading every headline. Keep your wits about you. #COVID19
4️⃣ scientists are constantly studying the virus & it's variants that pop up. They are studying what current mutations mean.

5️⃣ some vaccines are targeting several parts of protein, so hopefully they will remain effective despite mutations (🔗 to @KizzyPhD 🧵⤵️)
BUT most importantly is what we can all do to avoid the transmission of 🦠, bc this is what leads to its constant mutations & new strains: once again bringing us back to the Swiss 🧀 model:

I urge everyone to read @KizzyPhD entire 🧵 linked ⤴️.
Particularly important though, is this bit ⤵️
. @mugecevik is another expert to follow re: accurate & measured #COVID19 scientific assessment. #science

The entire 🧵 is important, but most important piece for everyone: regardless of mutations, remember to do your part #publichealth measures ⤵️ https://twitter.com/mugecevik/status/1341094907327492097?s=19
. @CPHO_Canada also addresses this new SARS-CoV-2 variant & the possibility of its presence in 🇨🇦.

Note conclusions based on the data we currently have. Remember #science is ongoing, so we stay vigilant as more information becomes available: ⤵️ #COVID19 https://twitter.com/CPHO_Canada/status/1341082049013276673?s=19
