Emily Dickson was born in Tyrone in 1866. Her mother was ill for much of Emily's childhood, & seeing the doctors at work, she decided that she wanted to be a doctor.

Accepted into the @RCSI_Irl in 1887,the only female student in her year. Awarded a licence to work as a #doctor in 1891,earned her Bachelor of #Medicine with first class honours in 1893, the same year she became the first female Fellow of the college. #IrishWomenInHistory

3/6 Because of her achievements as a student, Emily was given a travelling scholarship by the Royal University of Ireland. She spent 6 months working in Vienna & Berlin. In Berlin, one of her professors did not wish to accept a woman on his course, & accused her being a cheat.

In 1894 Dickson started to practice in #Dublin, & also worked as a hospital gynaecologist. From 1895-1898, she worked as the assistant master at the Coombe maternity hospital. In 1896, Emily was awarded her Doctorate in Medicine along with a Masters in Obstetrics. #medtwitter

At this point, though she was widely considered the best #gynaecologist in Dublin, many students didn't wish to be examined by a #woman, a large number of them presented a petition to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons, asking that she be removed from her position.

After marriage in 1899, Emily didn't work for a few years, but returned during World War 1. She was dedicated to providing the best medical treatment, to supporting in particular women from the working classes, & to the cause of women's emancipation. #IrishWomenInHistory
