I've been reading a bit about the new #SARSCoV2 in #UK. I made a figure and this thread to better understand this #UKvariant with 9 mutations in the Spike Protein. There is a concern for 3 of these mutations that could enhance the transmission.

#ECDC suggests control its spread since it is under investigation.

The 3 missense mutations (amino acid substitutions) raising concerns are:
-D614G, already detected a few months ago
-N501Y, affecting the S protein domain required for binding with the ACE2 receptor in human cells
-P681H, located at a protease cut site required for cell entry

As stated in this article, there is controversy about the effect of D614G on viral transmission. Assays in the lab suggest that D614G could favor the transmission but such an effect has not been clearly observed in the population. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02544-6
The N501Y mutation seems to provide a more favorable interaction with ACE2 for docking and entry, IN MICE

P681H is located at a Multi Cleavage Site domain used by the cellular protease furin for Spike protein cleavage, which is essential for entry in human lung cells.

The concern is that these 3 suspicious mutations COULD have an additive or synergistic effect to increase the virulence of SARS-Cov-2.
