What exactly is (and isn’t) copywriting & how it can make you $$$ whether you are:

- a business owner
- a guy with a pen and a piece of paper

// THREAD //
• What is it?

Copywriting is writing aimed at persuading a chosen group of people to do whatever you want them to do

(usually buy something)

It’s heavily rooted in sales and psychology

For that reason, great salespeople usually make good copywriters as well
• What it’s not?

Copywriting has little to do with the conventional writing

You don’t have to be Ernest Hemingway to write a good copy

Too much creativity will usually make your copywriting worse
As the legendary adman David Ogilvy said:

“When I write an advertisement, I don’t want you to tell me that you find it creative

I want you to find it so interesting that you buy the product”
• It’s everywhere

Newspapers, TV commercials, sales letters, landing pages, emails

- the list goes on

You will come across copywriting everywhere and every day

If you’re going to be bombarded with it all the time

You should understand how it works
• It’s based on emotions

Great copywriting starts by making you feel

Then (and only then) it makes you think

- FEAR
- HOPE
- DOUBT
- SHAME
- PRIDE
- GREED
- LOVE

These are the 7 strongest human emotions your copy should address
• It tells a story

Great copywriting ignites imagination & curiosity

It does so by telling readers a story about a product or a brand

Example?
KFC didn’t win because it served better chicken

It won because it told a better story about a quirky old guy

A guy that makes you wonder, “What is it about him & his chicken?”
• It makes THE difference

The right design & aesthetics are necessary but not crucial

What’s crucial is how YOU speak to your audience and what message you leave them with
If your copywriting resonates with them, addresses their hopes & fears

(i.e. fear of dying from lung cancer)

You’ll get a sale

If not, that’s a tough-luck
• If you’re a business owner

Copywriting is the single most crucial ingredient in building a loyal following for your brand

Is your business struggling? The chances are your copy just plain out sucks
• If you’re a pen-and-paper-broke kind of guy

You can offer copywriting services to businesses both online and locally

Best copywriters are the highest-paid writers on the planet

The bigger the business you craft copy for, the bigger your payout
• How can you learn copywriting?

Before you become a copy-virtuoso that can sell ice to Eskimos

You need to go down into trenches and learn a LOT
The more you study, the better your copy

The better your copy, the better your clients

The better your clients, the better your payouts

You get the idea - it’s worth it
Here are a few surefire ways to get into the copywriting game ASAP:

- Learn psychology principles (check R. Cialdini)

- Study classic ads: take notes & rewrite them by hand

- Read books on marketing & advertising (Ogilvy, Schwartz, Hopkins)

and of course – write every day
• Follow & learn from others
