For those wondering, in light of recent events, abt UK food self-sufficiency, here’s the key graph.
As it happens UK is more self-sufficient today (64% of food produced domestically) than in the 1950s (50% or below)
But current levels have dropped since early 1980s peak of 78%
This island nation has always relied on food imports from overseas.
Even during WW1 & WW2, where food imports from allies became all important.
Even in the 17th century food imports vastly outweighed exports (acc to records from the port of London).
Worth noting that “food self-sufficiency” can mean a few different things.
In this case I’m referring to domestic production as % of food supply - the definition DEFRA uses. Here’s a flowchart of the UK food chain
