Me: working class (white) family in low-SES migrant-rich western burbs of ADL. High unemplymnt, low uni education. Strong anti-racist culture (Aus Day v foreign for eg). Also my family: tearing up to heartbreaking class-conscious songs by one of our best singer-songwriters. https://twitter.com/oz_f/status/1340794348129067008
My rents were in a left folk band growing up. Covered Paul Kelly songs. Toured prisons playing for poor inmates like those in How To Make Gravy. I always welled-up when mum sang To Her Door. A working class love song that hits close to home. Here’s dad at Mt Gambier prison gig.
We should never discount multicultural solidarity forged across working class communities everyday. People live & work together. Coworkers in my rents jobs (construction & nursing) mostly migrant ESL. I learnt Vietnamese in my public school. 80% of friends growing up non-Anglo.
These are Year 12s at Woodville High my old HS who organised a Black Lives Matter action. Refugees, migrants, Aboriginal, anglos. All from working or unemployed families, getting it done. This is a real representation of Australia.
I feel sorry for those who never got to see this. To feel solidarity across divides & potential of everyday people.
Cultural homogeneity & "whiteness" is concentrated among wealthiest. So its a problem our media class near eclipse professional, private-educated class in the media venn diagram. You cant extrapolate from inner-city Sydney or Melb & private schooling & call it "Australia".
