In Andean cosmology (which doesn’t just include the Incas), Wiraqocha was seen as the creator of the universe. He created the stars, the sun, the moon, all the andean tribes and gave them their own language and customs. 5/?
After teaching everything there was to teach, he passed his staff to Manco Capac, a mythological figure who has been called the first Inca, and departed the heavens to never return. Wiraqocha has been associated with Saturn while Manco Capac has been seen as Jupiter 6/?
Andean cosmology is broken into 3 worlds or pachas all existing simultaneously and connected by a bridge (the milky way). These world were hana pacha (world above), ukhu pacha (world below) and kay pacha (this world). 7/?
They also broke down big events by pachakutics or end of the world as they knew it, where one era ended and a new one began 8/?
A myth retold by Francisco de Avila where he tells the story of a Pachakutic indicating the depature of Wiraqocha. The myth is too lengthy for twitter so I am including a picture here and taken from William Sullivan’s The secret of the Incas 9/?
The Llama (paqo) is an allegory to a stargazer shaman who was keeping track of the skies and knew that a conjunction between two important planets would indicate a new era for the people. This particular pachakutic would indicate a rise in military involvement 10/?
This Pachakutic also coincided with a change as procesion took over and the heliacal rise of the Pleiades at the summer solstice would no longer coincide with the “bridge” (milky way) lining up a certain way and thus not being able to connect the three pachas 11/?
Sullivan calculated that if this myth indicated a Saturn/Jupiter conjunction, it must have occurred on June 19 of the julian year 650 (his explanation is too long for twitter but it is based on the heliacal rise of the pleiades 12/?
the fact thar both saturn and jupiter were under the beams and thus obscured during the exact conjunction and were only visible as they were separating...seriously read his book). I had to imput the date (I picked the time based on sunset) and sure enough...13/?
A great conjunction happening in cancer. Where the old king was in fall and the newcomer in exaltation. Thus putting emphasis on Wiraqocha being unable to visit Kay Pacha as the bridge no longer aligned 14/?
This conjunction also happened in a water sign, adding significance to the “flood” and jupiter is moving toward mars, accentuating the upcoming military regimen in the andes 15/?
As a side note, I particularly enjoy this so much as it bring emphasis into the importance of myth and universal cosmology. The andean people were separated by time and space from the babylonians and egyptians, yet they saw similar things in the heavens 16/?
