How Britney's team SABOTAGED her "baby" Glory - a #FreeBritney thread
Glory by Britney Spears is the 9th studio album from the Princess of Pop. It was recently re-released and if you have not heard it, you need to listen to the whole thing because it is one of her best albums from top to bottom. #FreeBritney
However, Glory didn't reach the commercial acclaim it deserves and we believe that isn't by accident. Her record label and more broadly her conservatorship team SABOTAGED the album because it was the one album Britney really got to put her passion into. #FreeBritney
As you may know, Britney Spears has been under a conservatorship which gives her father complete control over all of her finances and personal affairs. #FreeBritney
In 2016, Britney had just gotten over the Britney Jean era which was filled with controversy over the authenticity of some of the vocals. So Britney's team KNEW they needed her buy-in for this record. #FreeBritney
The executive producer of Glory, Karen Kwak, said there wasn't one song on Glory that Britney was told she had to sing. "Britney pursued the songs she wanted to do for herself. She came up with concepts and melodies. It’s her baby.” #FreeBritney
Producers who worked on the album also talked highly of Britney's involvement. She wrote many of the concepts that are on the album, such as "Just Like Me" which is about finding your ex cheating on someone who looks just like you. #FreeBritney
So the music is good. Britney is more involved with this album than ever, what happened? It was her team's promotion and the roll out of the album that was the problem. #FreeBritney
It all starts on June 2nd, 2016. News breaks that Britney is filming a new music video for "Make Me..." ft. G Eazy. We get photos of them on set. "Day one ✔️" she writes. #FreeBritney
Make Me... dropped WITHOUT A MUSIC VIDEO and debuted at #17 with 96,000 copies sold in its first week. It had 5.3 million streams in the U.S. and a 20 million audience in radio airplay. A music video on release week would have helped it reach the top 10 for sure. #FreeBritney
It took them 3 weeks to drop the official music video and fans realized NONE of the original footage was in it. The original music video was completely scrapped and it was replaced by a much cheaper version completely filled with product placements. #FreeBritney
That obviously didn't sit well with fans, who started petitions for them to release the original video. #FreeBritney
After the official video's release, the song rebounded on the Hot 100 but only from #67 to #43. Could the original video have done better? We will never know, but ultimately it should have been released when the song came out. #FreeBritney
Britney then began promoting Glory by releasing three promotional songs from the album: Private Show, Clumsy, and Do You Wanna Come Over? These are all great songs, but fans can all agree there were much better choices that could have better represented the album. #FreeBritney
On August 26th, 2016, Britney released her Glory album with a cover that's clearly a SCREENSHOT from the new Make Me... video they filmed. The album debuts at #3 on the Billboard 200 due to poor promotion. #FreeBritney
Britney's team also released a Deluxe version at this time, which includes some of the best songs on the album like "Better" "Change Your Mind" and "Liar." So if you bought the standard version, you completely lost out. #FreeBritney
There was also a bonus track that only made the Japanese version of Glory called "Mood Ring" which many fans believed deserved to be a single. #FreeBritney
Britney then performed at the 2016 VMAs and it was her big comeback from her last performance in 2007. She did amazing and the crowd loved it. #FreeBritney
Because of the performance, Make Me... repeaked at #17. However, her label should have WAITED to release the lead single and the music right before the VMAs and she easily could have had another top 10, maybe even top 5. And then drop the album the next week. #FreeBritney
During the promotion for Glory overseas, Britney talked about her conservatorship for the first time publicly saying previously "a lot of decisions were made for me so I wanted this to be my baby." However, those parts were cut from the interview before it aired. #FreeBritney
After this, it is RADIO SILENCE for months. All the hype for Glory is starting to fall and it wasn't until NOVEMBER that they released the second single "Slumber Party" ft. Tinashe. #FreeBritney
RCA gave Slumber Party very little radio play or playlisting and the song reached #86 on the charts solely because of the music video. It deserved so much more! #FreeBritney
And that's it. The Glory era is seemingly over for the next few years as Britney wraps up her Las Vegas residency and her manager Larry Rudolph finally comes clean about the scrapped Make Me... music video. #FreeBritney
Things were quiet for a while before the #FreeBritney movement erupted in 2019 as fans began to realize the control Britney's team has had over her daily life and finances because she is under a conservatorship.
Then, mysteriously in 2019, the original Make Me... video leaks online. The video includes imagery of Britney in a cage and bull-dozing a house. #FreeBritney
The director for the music video, David LaChapelle, spoke out saying it was "suspect" that it leaked when it did, and that the only direction Britney gave him was to "film her in a cage." #FreeBritney
In 2020, fans started #JusticeForGlory and got the album back up to #1 on the iTunes chart. Britney posted that she was having "the best day ever."
This began the 2020 re-release of Glory, which starts with them releasing a "radically different" new album cover from the original photoshoot with David LaChapelle where Britney is surrounded by chains in the desert. #FreeBritney
They also released two remixes for "Mood Ring" a few weeks later when the hype was already completely dead. #FreeBritney
A few months go by and #FreeBritney rockets back into the mainstream because of a court battle over who will control her massive estate. Britney was successful in adding a trust company to manage her finances, but still wants her father removed.
Then we get word that Glory (Deluxe) was being released on vinyl with two new songs. The announcement was a shit show because independent record stores had to refund thousands of people, and Britney's team completely screwed them over by putting it on Amazon. #FreeBritney
RCA waited over two weeks to release the song Swimming In The Stars for her birthday. It was a Wednesday, so we only had 1 1/2 days left for the tracking week. As a result, the song was #18 on the digital song sales chart instead of top 10. Again zero radio play. #FreeBritney
People had already started getting their vinyls and the second song with Backstreet Boys had been leaked for over a week before they finally released it to streaming. #FreeBritney
They ultimately released Glory (Deluxe) on the same day Taylor Swift surprise dropped another album, when they could have released it a week earlier when the only competition would have been Shawn Mendes. #FreeBritney
We expect Glory (Deluxe) to re-enter the Billboard 200 next week, but not as high as it could have if it were released a week before on December 4th with both Swimming In The Stars and Matches and NOT against a new Taylor Swift album. #FreeBritney
We also got more leaks from the original Make Me... video which show the TRUTH that Britney was actually chained to a house (which fits with the OG music video where she bulldozes it down.) #FreeBritney
Plus, we now know Britney's team had so many better images to use for the original release of Glory than the screenshot album cover we were given in 2016. #FreeBritney
It is clear Britney's label only cares that she is successful to the extent that they can make more money off her. That's why many of their decisions do not make any sense if they were trying to make Glory a commercial success, not just a quick cash grab. #FreeBritney
Britney deserves a team who cares about her as a person and her as an artist. Please help us spread the word so we can #FreeBritney from her team of corrupt people who only care about their own pocket books!
