Until the 1970’s, when integration became the assumptive logic in what Blacks should strive towards, there was not a theory which suggested BM were primal rapist or violent that didn’t also implicate BW as either promiscuous or violent insofar as their very womanhood was impure.
What I am suggesting is that, historically, the idea of the Black male as violent or rapey was inextricably tied to the notion that BW were sexually lascivious inasmuch as they could not be raped because BM and BW were understood as primal and “beastial”.
a few examples: In “The Plantation negro as freeman” (1889), written by Phillip Alexander Bruce, he describes Black men as “beastial” and suggested they take a “fiendish delight” in degrading their victims through acts of rape.
but as you continue to read, notice what Bruce does here. He goes on to suggest that BM rape with impunity because they were use to BW being wanton (lascivious), and impure. even suggesting that BW could not be raped.
So fast forwarding to the the mid-late 20th century, Wolfgang & Ferracuti (1967) —notice what this racist, sexist theory implies— suggested that in the Black community, violence was due to the fact that Black woman were more aggressive & had to take on a matriarchal role.
Okay, now on to Menachem Amir (1971). Amir was a student of Wolfgang & Farrcuti. What Amir did was take the work of his teachers—which explained Black subcultures and homicide— and use it to explain rape.
notice what Amir does in the first excerpt. He suggest the negro subculture is characterized by “the search for thrills through aggressive acts and sexual exploits”. He goes on to suggest much of it had to do with their masculinity.
but wait, in the second excerpt, which is actually a few pages before this, Amir says that the Black mother is the transmitter of the subculture, and through cultural norms such as promiscuity, they are active participants in why BM rape.
It isn’t until the mid 70’s that you get notions of BM as rapist that aren’t tied to BW. white feminist such as Joyce Williams & Karen Holmes (1981) started to use theories (citing Amir) that said BM raped not because of any connection to BW, but b/c they got it from White men!
It’s the same racist theory and logic without the idea that the entire Black community is part of the subculture of violence! And we use these theories today!
