2. The word 'Kabbalah' means roughly 'that which is received' and generally denotes the accumulated Jewish religious knowledge. As the Tanakh is written in Hebrew, a knowledge of the language and alphabet was considered religious knowledge as well.
3. Much study was put into the esoteric properties of the letters and how they may be used in exegesis of the Tanakh. These studies are known as the Literal Kabbalah and were divided into 3 sections: Gematria, Notariqon and Temurah.
4. Hebrew did not have a separate number system so their letters functioned as numbers, meaning that their letters had inherent numerical values (as the English alphabet does not). The word 'Gematria' derived from the Greek 'geometria' meaning 'measure of the Earth' ...

8. Notariqon is the art of acrostics, acronyms & such, using either the first or last letters of words. For instance, the great archangel Argaman is seen as a composite of Auriel, Raphael, Gabriel, Michael and Nuriel in combined power. Temurah is the art of substitutions.
