1. African Philosophy must not remain static, it must evolve. Chivanhu must evolve to bring us into the next golden age. I know a Professor who left his job in Australia to come and study rodent brains in Africa because 25% of rodent species are in Africa.
2. The goal was to study how the brain makes new neurons throughout a rodent's lifetime with the hope of finding an animal model that closely mimics the human condition and then perhaps find ways to design curative regiments to treat neurodegenerative diseases.
3. The tragedy however was that when these ideas were brought to Zim, our all-knowing never-erring elders simply focused on the term "rodent" and all they could see was "gonzo remusango" and not the unique opportunity that was available for massive research.
4. Our Philosophy needs to evolve, we could have done science in our backyards with GREAT funding but we rejected that and now the opportunity we lost was lost forever. People are studying neurodegenerative diseases using worms and fish😅.
5. I can even see myself trying to convince a Zim Professor to invest in C. Elegans research to investigate respiratory system development and try out gene therapy for the same 😅😂.. Chances are slim. But others have used the same things and are getting value from it.
6. It isn't that we don't see value in it, I've noted that Zim scientists when it comes to biological research many want to use humans. To be honest there is just some research not ethically possible to do in humans and animal models might be the way.
7. Africa is unique in that it does have the diversity in species and animal organisms to be a real biological powerhouse but animal research is despised. As a result, we are unable to answer some deep biological questions and are reduced to consumers of science from elsewhere.
8. We could domesticate and use kapenta for gene therapy research if we wanted, why not have a kapenta biological research center at Kariba? Use 1 billion from gold smuggling to build a research center there and it would be an attraction for global researchers.
9. The University of Oregon, where I am was the first to use zebrafish as a model organism and this spread from Oregon to the rest of the world. There is great gold mine of science locally, it is time to change our Philosophical awareness and soar higher ✌️✌️✊.
