This is one of my favorite works of art. The artist was a Ponca named Standing Buffalo. He drew a battle. I love it because he fought in it in 1869 with 2 of my ancestors and what we see is his experience seen through his eyes, preserved forever by his hand—like a photo. So cool!
This is a picture I colorized of the artist Standing Buffalo from 1877. He lived until 1901 and had a large family that survived him. He has a large number of descendants living today. Very important to remember that Native Americans are still here and this isn’t ancient history
