One thing I’ve learnt in 2020 is to feel my feelings & not invalidate anybody else’s. You can simultaneously feel angry, sad, joyful, & grateful. Nobody needs a ‘yeah but it could be worse’ when they tell you how they feel. We don’t have to diminish or contextualise how we feel.
When we invalidate a persons feelings we send a message to them that they should hold back. Push it down. Not see their emotions through. That’s damaging at the best of times, and certainly not something we should be encouraging now (or ever!).
Sometimes all people need is to be seen and heard.
