ppl joke abt memento mori but i just wanna draw attention to furudate’s thought process behind sakusa’s character. the message in haikyuu that hard work, passion etc is tied to the reality that we’re mortal & limited as humans is a theme furu brings up many, many times
sakusa tells hinata when he joins msby that he doesn’t associate with ppl who don’t take care of themselves. it’s another way of saying “i don’t associate with ppl who don’t remember their mortality.” ergo, memento mori.
furudate reiterates this theme so many times. it’s a reminder to the characters of hq AND to us. sakusa’s personality kinda embodies that. if furu had only thought abt their banner in relation to sakusa’s relationship to hinata, then i can see why ‘memento mori’ was considered
i know this might seem obvious but i really think that’s at least one facet of what furu would’ve done to tie in ‘memento mori’ if they’d used it. that being said, i’m glad furu ended up going against it 😆 in the end it’s a bit too on the nose & edgy, & that’s not their style
that being said, haikyuu as an entire series can, in a sense, be a symbolic sort of memento mori for us: a reminder that we’re mortal & have limits, & it’s something we ought to keep in mind when pursuing our passions
