ppl joke abt memento mori but i just wanna draw attention to furudateâs thought process behind sakusaâs character. the message in haikyuu that hard work, passion etc is tied to the reality that weâre mortal & limited as humans is a theme furu brings up many, many times
sakusa tells hinata when he joins msby that he doesnât associate with ppl who donât take care of themselves. itâs another way of saying âi donât associate with ppl who donât remember their mortality.â ergo, memento mori.
furudate reiterates this theme so many times. itâs a reminder to the characters of hq AND to us. sakusaâs personality kinda embodies that. if furu had only thought abt their banner in relation to sakusaâs relationship to hinata, then i can see why âmemento moriâ was considered
i know this might seem obvious but i really think thatâs at least one facet of what furu wouldâve done to tie in âmemento moriâ if theyâd used it. that being said, iâm glad furu ended up going against it
in the end itâs a bit too on the nose & edgy, & thatâs not their style

that being said, haikyuu as an entire series can, in a sense, be a symbolic sort of memento mori for us: a reminder that weâre mortal & have limits, & itâs something we ought to keep in mind when pursuing our passions
