Twitter is a forum for public discussion. Just because you have lots of followers and express an opinion contra institutional knowledge doesn't mean you've declared yourself the "arbiter of truth". It means you've participated in a discussion by taking a stance.
Can popular pundits tweet bad things that misinform their followers? Yes! So let's focus on the many valid reasons why they might be wrong.
