Tomorrow morning at 10:02 , Ireland will be at its furthest tilt away from the sun. At 10:03 we will begin to tilt back toward it. From this point on , the days will be “getting longer”. Here’s a short thread on what changes we can expect each month until June 21. #WinterSolstice
In terms of daylight, Dec 21 is an incredible 9 hours, 46 minutes shorter than on June 21st. (Later sunrises and earlier sets) All the info I’m regurgitating can be found with a detailed picture for your locality at http://timeanddate.com
From the 21st day next month:
A slight wee stretch. Nothing too wild though. You can expect some sunlight around 5pm by then though which we’ve not seen since November!

By the end of February, you’ll notice a welcome change. The ending of winter and bright until about 6. The mornings will also be much easier to get through if you’re 9-5 (you’ll wake up around sunrise!)
March does wonders. This is the month we can start saying that the stretch is “grand” . As we approach the equinox, the sun takes longer “to set” and as the clocks go forward there is light until near half 8! This month is a big change. Note for early risers: some dark mornings!
After the first month of spring has passed, you’ll notice April sorts it’s mornings out and stretches the day into early night time. Perfect for a late evening walk. Again the sun takes a good age to set! Bright-ish until around quarter past 9. We’re well and truly “grand” by now
May is the last of the growths and the ending of springtime. The longer days now stretch into “Bright nights”. You’ll see the sun on horizons from just after 4am until after a quarter past 10pm.
In June, nighttime barely gets a look in. Ireland is cursed with dark winters but the brightest of summers. You could go for a walk at 930pm as if it were around 6pm and be home by 11pm and still have some light to guide you home. (Fun fact: latest sunset isn’t the 21st)
The wildest thing to note though is we have been living with a sunset around 4pm here all month. By June , that will be after 10pm. You can’t help but be fascinated by a beauty we have 0 control over! (And shouldn’t!) Happy Solstice and Happy Christmas!
