This #SundayMorning we're asking ourselves...
coup or no coup?
That is the question.
The next 30 days loom before us.
Will Trump's attempts to install himself as a dictator succeed?

(2) Now that Trump's legal options have run out & the electoral college has voted to cement Biden's victory, Trump's options to overturn a fair election have narrowed.
This week, Flynn floated imposing martial law, the very definition of a military coup. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/12/trump-coup-sidney-powell-martial-law-michael-flynn-meltdown.html

(3) The chances that a military coup could succeed are slim to none, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be concerned.
Recent changes among Pentagon leadership and backtracking on sharing intelligence briefings with Biden suggest something is afoot. https://news.yahoo.com/pentagon-officials-reportedly-stunned-acting-165434546.html

(4) The more likely explanation is that the Trump administration is actively working to undermine the incoming administration.
But we would be foolish to disregard the very real and present danger Trump poses during his last 30 days in office. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/steve-schmidt-lincoln-project-trump-election-b1774749.html

(5) As this article points out, Trump lacks most of the essential ingredients to stage a successful coup. He doesn't have the media or the international community on his side and there's no evidence the military would support him.
That's cold comfort. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2020/12/09/trump-coup-election-dispute/

(6) Yes, there'll be nonsense in Congress in January. Republicans will stage a last stand for authoritarianism and it's almost certain to fail.
But the support this circus show garnered among the GOP is by itself indicative of a long battle ahead. https://www.rawstory.com/trump-coup/

(7) The fact that we've arrived at this moment in history where a President would attempt to seize power through the use of the military and install himself as a dictator and that he could do so with a majority of Republicans supporting him is terrifying. https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/trumps-coup-attempt-isnt-over
(8) Yes, this coup will fail but the fact that Trump is able to stage it without challenge from his own party isn't just discouraging. It's enraging.
White minority rule has taken this country hostage and they're still dictating the terms of our release. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/12/trumps-farcical-inept-and-deadly-serious-coup-attempt/617309/

(9) Once Trump leaves the White House (and he will even if he has to be carried out kicking and screaming), we need to ask ourselves how we will deal with the enablers. The 1%, right-wing media, and the GOP.
They aren't just going to "come around." https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/12/congress-will-likely-vote-on-trumps-election-coup.html

(10) There must be consequences. Or in another four years, we'll find ourselves right back here. In a gerrymandered country held hostage by white minority rule.
Trump's coup will fail. But we'll pay the price of his presidency for decades. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/may/20/rich-white-men-rule-america-minority-rule
