One thing I find interesting about famous people that come out as trans or gender fluid is that people’s reaction to the news is completely telling about their attitudes.
Like, cis people who aren’t bigoted just DGAF, because it doesn’t affect them in any way that actually matters that someone famous is now referring to themselves differently because it makes them more comfortable and happy.
Non-cis people DO care, because the public reaction to someone famous doing what they also did/want to do matters a lot to them.
But cis people who kick up a fuss or express their dislike or refuse to use pronouns etc = 100% betraying their internal bigotry.
No other reason. It’s just like it was when gay marriage was being debated.

“I just don’t agree with...”
“I’m not against gay people but...”
“I shouldn’t have to accept...”
Noooope you’re just bigoted. If you weren’t, then you wouldn’t care enough to say anything.

Like other people’s marriages, other people’s gender identities have no effect on your life.
The only argument that holds any kind of logic is the stuff about bathrooms/women-specific sexual assault spaces...
The only argument that holds any kind of logic is the stuff about bathrooms/women-specific sexual assault spaces...
But that logic boils down to “we think fucking over vulnerable trans and enby people is acceptable in order to prevent the possibility of a cis male getting in by lying, as if signs saying no men allowed ever protected women”
I have no patience for any solution that purports to solve a problem that is likely imaginary AND also sacrifices the people who need the most help.
It’s still bullshit bigotry, like they can’t accept the existence of trans/enby people who desperately need to use a particular washroom to keep themselves safe. Their attitude is still and always will be “trans women = dangerous sexual predator men trying to get at us”
Rank transphobia by another name, that just completely dismisses that trans men exist at all. It’s foul.
But again: it’s just not something that’s ever likely to affect their lives.
It just fucking well isn’t. Your gender identity is not changed or modified by anyone else’s gender identity.

Your life is not materially affected by a trans woman entering a bathroom, taking a piss in the stall next to you, washing her hands, doing her makeup, and leaving without interacting with you. You can’t get trans cooties by her being in the same room as you.
FFS you don’t stop being a woman just because Eddie Izzard wants to refer to herself in female terms from now on.
You don’t stop being a woman when you have a hysterectomy or a mastectomy, and that’s a lot more relevant to you than someone else’s pronouns.

Gender identity is in the self, somewhere in the bedrock of consciousness. It’s weird and fluid and nebulous, and it should make you feel awe at the wondrous depth of nature; how it defies our attempts to fit it into small labelled boxes.
So if you feel uncomfortable about Eddie Izzard, if you feel you can’t accept her as she wants to be - if you feel your identity as a woman is lessened by her, or her existence threatens you in some way:
Then that says everything about you, and nothing about her.
Then that says everything about you, and nothing about her.
Maybe you’re not as unbiased as you think.
... or maybe you’re not as cis as you think.
Just stuff I’m thinking about this morning.
