yknow, i think part of the reason cyberpunk 2077 fails even as a basic cyberpunk genre game is because the sort of neon dystopian future of cyberpunk that we've seen over and over again isn't... real? it doesn't have any basis in reality anymore, not in 2020
we know what modern day megacorps who control half or more of our entire lives in some specific market look like. they're not publicly scary companies that have ties to the mob and fragantly kill people in a public manner, they're google, they're facebook, they're microsoft
most of all, they're disney
the real cyberpunk dystopia that capitalism unfettered creates is not scary and imposing and threatening, its service with a smile, cuteness overloads, social media companies acting like they're people and not only that, but that they're your friends

disney owns almost half of all media fucking produced now-a-days, and yet it markets its parks as "the happiest place on earth"
amazon, disney, apple, microsoft, facebook, google, they're megacorps by any of cyberpunk's definitions and we think of them as benevolent

and i think if you write cyberpunk now, you have to take something like that into account. you can keep having all the blade runner neon stuff, thats cool and interesting visually sure, but evil corporations that everyone hates and will kill you? no, not really
if anything, something like watch dogs 2 and legion is far more realistically cyberpunk than 2077 or any other cyberpunk thing along those lines in awhile. it shows how terrifying those silicon valley style places are.
