There were so many COVID patients last night, but ONE stood out.

How the teenager arrived to the emergency room without their parents is in itself a miracle, for if it was 30 minutes later the teen would have surely DIED from COVID. 1/5
Breathing every second is exhausting and WE could ALL SEE IT on the teen’s face - the look of tiring out and giving up. "Satting 50% on room air," said the EMT. "How many days has the teen been breathing like this?" we all thought 2/5
“I’m going to put in a breathing tube to help you breathe,” I said while looking in the teen’s eyes filled with fear, skin drenched in sweat and gasping for breath. The teen acknowledged my statement by nodding up-and-down slowly with their very last energy. 3/5
Setting up for the intubation ran like clockwork because of my great team consisting of a respiratory tech, 3 nurses and ER tech. So much goes into an intubation, so I always ask, "Do we have meds, glide scope, ambu bag and a ventilator?" Yes, they replied. Then let's go! 4/5
After the intubation, I stood by the bedside stroking the teen's forehead and softly said, “You’re going to be alright, just hang in there.” Then by the grace of God, our nurse care coordinator found a bed and 1 hr later the teen was medevaced to an ICU for possible ECMO. /end
