I understand Utah still has the Little man syndrome where they think they aren’t gonna get free agents etc etc.. but this honest to god feels like quite a bit of lying to themselves
Gobert has gotten smacked in three straight playoffs, all by teams with either stretch bigs or teams that refuse to let him stand at the rim.
The hype train goes off the rails during the regular season when teams just say ah fuck it and let him stand at the rim and don’t put him into actions. So the numbers and the production look ill
They even invented a term called vertical gravity for him to stroke the ego of a guy with no offensive skills (hes not a very good screen setter either) as if dudes haven’t been rim running for eons
It’s very likely that this deal looks worse framed against all the money tied up to Mitchell, bogdanovic and conley (lest we forget clarkson). But I still kinda think in a vacuum, it’s a terrible contract
It’s also very likely Utah is playing a long game of “let’s show the nba we take care of our guys no matter what” which is admirable. But are you telling me in the next 4 yrs of Mitchell, Gobert, bogdanovic & clarkson they’re gonna be a tough matchup for: dal, lal, lac, pdx, gsw?
Let alone den, hou, phx (who Chris Paul always destroys btw) and up and coming teams that will bully inside (New Orleans) or stretch the hell out of Gobert (memphis and minny)
In short: contract is lmao for a plethora of reasons
