A short story:

Last June, body of a woman was found in a field in a Meerut village. It was mutilated with head and arms chopped. Nobody knew who she was, so police began to work with very weak clues
Police tracked call details of locals and found one number was having constant interactions in Ludhiana. Meerut police sent a team to Ludhiana. They cracked the case a year later. Woman was 22-yr-old Ekta Jaswal. A year ago, she had come to Meerut after eloping with Mohd Saqib
She had met Saqib when he was working in Ludhiana. Her parents met him, but did not like him. They disapproved of the relationship. Ekta left her parents and moved in with Saqib. Parents gave up. They did not file any case against Saqib. Slow, they lost touch with Ekta
Ekta shifted with Saqib to Haryana. Parents did not know

Ekta married Saqib. Parents did not know

Ekta went to Meerut with Saqib, and took away her jewellery and cash with her. Parents did not know

Saqib and his family chopped Ekta to pieces. Parents did not know
Parents came to know only when police identified the body as Ekta’s and met them this June

Woman champions want all parents to be like Ekta’s - respect the daughter’s choice. If she elopes, don’t go around filing police cases. Let them be. Celebrate love
. @tavleen_singh has written a beautiful editorial today against parents of primitive mindset filing cases against the man if their daughter elopes - the inspiration behind my short story.
